Now you are in the UK, there are a few things that you will need to know to help you establish a life in the UK.
Accommodation
Accommodation can be very expensive in London, so ideally you want to move into a flat/ room share room as soon as possible. More than likely you will find yourself either:
- Living short term in a Hostel
- Dossing on a friends couch/ or in their room
- Renting accommodation i.e, shared flats, shared rooms and bedsits
Once you have established a place to stay, it is a good idea to then set up the following:
Bank Account
You may have heard by now that it is a nightmare trying to open a UK bank account. You will need as much documentation and information as possible including - proof of identification (passport, driver's licence and/or birth certificate), a utility bill in your name, proof of employment and a reference from your bank back home. For a small fee, there are some companies which can take the strain off you and help you open up an account, but ideally it is much easier to open an account through your bank back home. Once the account is open it will be a basic debit account until a proven savings/ account management history has been established, this usually takes around 6 months.
National Insurance (NI) Number
If you are working in the UK, you need to have a NI Number, which is required for tax purposes. Check out the inland revenue website http://www.inlandrevenue.gov.uk or call the Department of Work and Pensions on 0845-6000 643 or text 0845-6000 644 to arrange an appointment. You will need your passport, proof of address in the UK, evidence of work in the UK or evidence that you are in the process of work, plus another couple of forms of ID.
Pensions
If you want to make the most of the pound (£) while in the UK, there are various Financial Advisors that can assist in setting up appropriate pensions, offer tax advice and how to benefit from National Insurance contributions. Contact us to find out more.

I just wanted to drop you a quick note to say thank you for all of your support and help. You've been a fantastic company to work with, and I've been thoroughly impressed by the highly professional level of service I've received.
I've been particularly impressed with your courteous manner, and I think it really sets you apart from other recruitment agencies. As you know, job hunting can be a stressful process, and the fact that you stayed in regular contact with me throughout the period was extremely reassuring.
I'm absolutely delighted about my new position and for the first time in awhile I'm not dreading Monday. It's a lovely feeling.
I wouldn't normally write such a gushing email, but as I mentioned, I've been really impressed.
I'm looking forward to working with you again in the future, and I'll be recommending you to all my Antipodean friends.
